Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American author, poet, and critic. In 1834 Poe married his cousin Virginia, who was not quite fourteen at the time, and began seriously seeking a means of supporting "his family." In the spring of 1835, the family moved back to Richmond where Poe took a position with the Southern Literary Messenger . Paul Galdone was born circa 1907 in Budapest, Austria- Hungary and immigrated to the United States in 1921. Galdone studied art at the Art Student's League and New York School for Industrial Design . He served in World War II in the U.S. Army, Engineers. The author and illustrator of children's books also was employed as a bus boy, electrician's helper, and fur dryer, in addition to four years in the art department at Doubleday (NY).
